Leader and follower

Think leaders need to have all the answers? Think again.

This month, Gallup published its ‘Global Leadership Report: What Followers Want’*, revealing the four key needs of followers:

  • Hope – The need to feel positive about the future and for leaders to provide a clear direction (56%)
  • Trust – the need for honesty respect and integrity (33%)
  • Compassion – the need to feel cared about and listened to (7%)
  • Stability – the need for psychological safety and secure foundations during times of uncertainty (4%)

If you’ve ever felt pressure to have every detail figured out before leading with confidence—this research should ease that burden. I see leaders—especially in times of uncertainty—worried that they can’t provide stability or certainty. But this study tells us that’s not what people need most.

Instead of worrying about the gaps in the plan and the uncertainty in the execution strategy, focus on communicating hope and a vision for the future, and building trust. This is what will inspire and anchor your team.

As a leader, how are you fostering hope and trust? What small shifts can you make today?
